waqt-e-piri shabab ki baaten
vaqt-e-pīrī shabāb kī bāteñ
aisī haiñ jaise ḳhvāb kī bāteñ
in old age talk of youth now seems
to be just like the stuff of dreams
phir mujhe le chalā udhar dekho
dil-e-ḳhāna-ḳharāb kī bāteñ
Lo! there again it takes me see!
my ruined heart's advice to me
vā.izā chhoḌ zikr-e-nemat-e-ḳhuld
kah sharāb-o-kabāb kī bāteñ
on heaven's virtues don't opine
O preacher talk of food and wine
mah-jabīñ yaad haiñ ki bhuul ga.e
vo shab-e-māhtāb kī bāteñ
do you recall O moon faced one
on moonlit nights what we had done
harf aayā jo aabrū pe mirī
haiñ ye chashm-e-pur-āb kī bāteñ
if, blemish on my honor, came
my teary eyes are then to blame
sunte haiñ us ko chheḌ chheḌ ke ham
kis maze se itaab kī bāteñ
I tease her for I love to hear
her anger's music to my ear
jām-e-mai muñh se tū lagā apne
chhoḌ sharm o hijāb kī bāteñ
do let your lips in wine immerse
let shame and modesty,disperse
mujh ko rusvā kareñgī ḳhuub ai dil
ye tirī iztirāb kī bāteñ
disgraced, O heart you now shall be
because of your anxiety
jaao hotā hai aur bhī ḳhafaqāñ
sun ke nāseh janāb kī bāteñ
go, angrier now let him be
when the preacher talks to me
qissa-e-zulf-e-yār dil ke liye
haiñ ajab pech-o-tāb kī bāteñ
-------
-------
zikr kyā josh-e-ishq meñ ai 'zauq'
ham se hoñ sabr o taab kī bāteñ
in love's ardour, zauq, how, pray
can I speak of restraint today?
waqt-e-piri shabab ki baaten
aisi hain jaise KHwab ki baaten
in old age talk of youth now seems
to be just like the stuff of dreams
phir mujhe le chala udhar dekho
dil-e-KHana-KHarab ki baaten
Lo! there again it takes me see!
my ruined heart's advice to me
waiza chhoD zikr-e-nemat-e-KHuld
kah sharab-o-kabab ki baaten
on heaven's virtues don't opine
O preacher talk of food and wine
mah-jabin yaad hain ki bhul gae
wo shab-e-mahtab ki baaten
do you recall O moon faced one
on moonlit nights what we had done
harf aaya jo aabru pe meri
hain ye chashm-e-pur-ab ki baaten
if, blemish on my honor, came
my teary eyes are then to blame
sunte hain us ko chheD chheD ke hum
kis maze se itab ki baaten
I tease her for I love to hear
her anger's music to my ear
jam-e-mai munh se tu laga apne
chhoD sharm o hijab ki baaten
do let your lips in wine immerse
let shame and modesty,disperse
mujh ko ruswa karengi KHub ai dil
ye teri iztirab ki baaten
disgraced, O heart you now shall be
because of your anxiety
jao hota hai aur bhi KHafaqan
sun ke naseh janab ki baaten
go, angrier now let him be
when the preacher talks to me
qissa-e-zulf-e-yar dil ke liye
hain ajab pech-o-tab ki baaten

zikr kya josh-e-ishq mein ai 'zauq'
hum se hon sabr o tab ki baaten
in love's ardour, zauq, how, pray
can I speak of restraint today?
