kuchh to duniyā kī ināyāt ne dil toḌ diyā
aur kuchh talḳhī-e-hālāt ne dil toḌ diyā
this world's benefaction broke my heart to some extent
and then by bitter circumstance partly my heart was rent
ham to samjhe the ke barsāt meñ barsegī sharāb
aa.ī barsāt to barsāt ne dil toḌ diyā
showers of wine, I did think, would come with rainy clime
but alas when it did rain my heart broke one more time
dil to rotā rahe or aañkh se aañsū na bahe
ishq kī aisī rivāyāt ne dil toḌ diyā
no tears were permissible though weeping be the heart
in love's domain such cruel customs tore my heart apart
vo mire haiñ mujhe mil jā.eñge aa jā.eñge
aise bekār ḳhayālāt ne dil toḌ diyā
that she is mine, will meet me, that she will come to me
such idle pointless speculation too caused me misery
aap ko pyaar hai mujh se ki nahīñ hai mujh se
jaane kyuuñ aise savālāt ne dil toḌ diyā
you love me or you don't, such queries when I make
I wonder why such questions cause my heart to break
